Hyderabad: A division bench of the Telangana high court on Friday directed the Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM) to deposit 50% of its 108 crore pending power dues — amounting to 54 crore, excluding interest — with the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) within three weeks, pending adjudication of the dispute. The direction came while hearing an appeal filed by the discom challenging a single judge’s order that had restored electricity supply to the university despite long-pending arrears.
The discom argued that the order was arbitrary as it did not mandate payment of any portion of the dues.Counsel for TGPDCL submitted that GITAM had accumulated power dues amounting to 108 crore over nearly two decades, starting from the financial year 2008–09. In view of the mounting arrears, the superintending engineer had issued a fresh notice to the university in Sept 2025, seeking clearance of the outstanding amount. He urged the court to direct the university to deposit a substantial portion of the dues, pointing out that payment of at least 50% of arrears was the standard norm for restoration of power supply.
