HC seeks govt response on RTE implementation

Hyderabad: Telangana high court on Thursday directed the state govt to explain its response in a suo motu public interest litigation concerning the implementation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act.The PIL was initiated based on a letter written to the Chief Justice by advocate Bathini Komuraiah, who highlighted the importance of universal elementary education in strengthening democracy under Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution. In his letter, Komuraiah alleged that despite the expansion of schools, high dropout rates continue to persist. He also flagged the absence of yoga classes for student wellness. He claimed that though education was declared a public utility service in 2016, the objectives of the RTE Act remain unfulfilled. He urged the court to direct the govt to establish an autonomous school education commission to independently ensure proper implementation of the Act and achieve its goals.Taking note of the issues raised, the bench ordered that the present PIL be tagged with other PILs and writ petitions pending before the high court on the same subject. It directed that details of all such matters be placed before it.The bench also appointed Komuraiah to assist the court as amicus curiae and asked the state to file its response by the next date of hearing. The matter was adjourned.
