Handicrafts fair returns to city after 10 yrs

Chennai: After nearly 10 years, the Dastkari Haat Crafts Bazaar, an exhibition showcasing India’s handmade traditions, is set to return to Chennai for a week-long programme. Organized by the Delhi-based Dastkari Haat Samiti, the fair will take place from Jan 30 till Feb 5 at NIFT Campus, Taramani. The bazaar brings together master artisans, weavers, painters and craft communities from across the country, showcasing works. The fair will be inaugurated on Friday at 5pm by renowned dance guru Leela Samson, a long-time supporter of the expo. Jaya Jaitly, founder of Dastkari Haat Samiti, said the return to Chennai holds special significance. “Chennai has always appreciated all kinds of arts. People here respect the effort and time that have gone into the craft and don’t bargain with the artisans. This, I feel happens a lot in other cities where the respect for tradition and our culture is lost,” she said.
