Chennai: A construction worker from Odisha was arrested for attacking an elderly homemaker and snatching her gold jewellery near Thiruporur. The accused was later traced and surrounded in a nearby forest area with the help of locals. Sargunaraj, a resident of Ambedkar Nagar in Kayar village near Thiruporur, constructed a new house while living in Porur with his wife, Sudarvizhi. His mother, Shanthi, 75, stayed at their ancestral home in Kayar and oversaw the construction work. On Jan 26, Shanthi stepped out for a walk on the same street when an unidentified man attacked her from behind and snatched her gold earrings and chain. A complaint was lodged with the Kayar police. During inquiry, suspicion fell on Azad Ali, 38, a mason.
Police found that Ali attacked Shanthi and escaped with the jewellery. Police found him in the forest area near Kayar where he was hiding. About three sovereigns of gold jewellery were recovered from him. TNN
