GU faces heat over attendance, accountability of permanent staff

Ahmedabad: Allegations of irregular attendance and weak accountability among permanent employees and officials at Gujarat University have resurfaced, raising concerns over administrative efficiency and governance. Student body NSUI has repeatedly flagged the issue, claiming that despite multiple representations, there has been little improvement in the functioning of the university. One of the key concerns was the absence of a formal attendance monitoring system for permanent staff. While over 350 job trainees employed on a temporary basis are required to mark biometric attendance, no such mechanism exists for more than 300 permanent employees and officers working across departments. NSUI has alleged that several employees fail to report to work on time or do not perform assigned duties. In recent months, videos purportedly showing such lapses were circulated on social media by activists, adding to the controversy.Sources said an internal review revealed that biometric attendance systems were limited only to job trainees, even though existing rules mandate attendance monitoring for all employees. Complaints have also surfaced about staff marking attendance and leaving the campus for personal work, and instances in the past where some employees allegedly did not return after availing leave.Earlier, a strict attendance register system was implemented under a former vice-chancellor but was later discontinued, leading to what sources described as administrative disorder. Meanwhile, delays in permanent recruitment have increased reliance on temporary staff, impacting overall efficiency at the university, added the student body.
