Hyderabad: Alarmed by a sharp rise in fake addresses being used to secure GST registrations, the commercial taxes department has tightened scrutiny across the state, putting all registration applications under close watch.Officials said a comprehensive monitoring mechanism has been activated across all 118 commercial tax circles, 14 divisions and 30 strategic taxpayer units to detect and prevent misuse. Officers have been instructed to remain alert and carefully examine every GST registration application, especially those linked to high-volume taxpayers handled by strategic taxpayer units. The move follows a recent regulatory change that removed mandatory pre-verification by officials before a GST number is issued. While the system now allows automated approvals, authorities have been directed to intensify checks after registration is granted to ensure the documents submitted are genuine and accurate. “After a new GST number is generated, officials will then check the documents uploaded to see whether the addresses are genuine or not. While all applications may not be fake, we will pay attention to the possibility of a fake address being uploaded,” senior officials said. The heightened vigilance comes amid an unprecedented spike in registrations.
