Govt decides to renovate facilities at Ekamra Haat

Bhubaneswar: The state govt has decided to take up a major renovation project at Ekamra Haat, the city’s cultural and crafts hub. The works will cover upgradation of open-air theatre, dormitory, and green room, aiming to enhance facilities for artisans, performers, and visitors.The Odisha Cooperative Tasar & Silk Federation (SERIFED) will spearhead the project. A tender was floated for the work to select an agency to complete the project. The entire work is expected to be completed in the next 6 months.According to the tender, the renovation will ensure better infrastructure for artisans who stay there, performers who use the stage, and audiences who come to enjoy Odisha’s traditions. With the completion, the city will get 1 more venue to host events.Local artisans welcomed the move. “We often face difficulties with accommodation and backstage facilities during exhibitions and performances. Improving these spaces will make our work easier and more dignified,” said craftsperson Ramesh Pradhan, who regularly participates in different city fairs.Citizens also welcomed the move. “Ekamra Haat is not just a marketplace. It is a cultural landmark. The open-air theatre is a favourite spot for cultural evenings. With better seating and facilities, it will attract more families and tourists,” said Ananta Dash, a Saheed Nagar resident.Ekamra Haat, a favourite spot for crafts and food lovers, is centrally located at Unit-III. Adjacent to the facility is the Exhibition Ground, where a range of fairs and events are held regularly. The venue recently hosted Sisira Sarasa.“The lawn and the open space inside Ekamra Haat are just beautiful. It provides the perfect place to hang out with family and friends. I saw the stage but never saw any kind of performance or event there,” said Namita Acharya, a regular visitor to Ekamra Haat.She said the open-air theatre is perfectly placed. “When decorated and upgraded properly, the open-air theatre will provide the best platform for cultural and musical programmes. It is rightly being developed now,” said Acharya, an art lover.
