Bhubaneswar: Indian Railways has sanctioned the final location survey to set up a coach maintenance facility at Golanthara near Berhampur station in Ganjam district. After the facility gets ready, many trains will originate from and terminate at Berhampur station. The Railway Board sanctioned the survey recently for creating the facility at Golanthara station, around 10 km from Berhampur station. It is an important step towards enhancing railway operational capacity in southern Odisha in the long run.“The proposed facility at Golanthara will function as a satellite coaching depot, easing congestion at Berhampur and creating much-needed space for smoother train operations. It will develop the area surrounding the station,” said Anshuman Satapathy, a resident of Berhampur and a railway fan.Key benefits of the proposed facility include decongestion of Berhampur yard and improved yard flexibility, the capacity to introduce more originating and terminating trains in future, better maintenance standards ensuring enhanced passenger safety, improved punctuality through efficient rake handling and turnaround, and a reduction in unnecessary empty rake movements.
