Guwahati: Ahead of Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s birthday, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), with the initiative of its councillors and support from various organisations, organised a series of community-oriented welfare programmes.On Friday, a citywide cleanliness campaign under the slogan “Clean Guwahati, Our Guwahati” was carried out at 120 locations, covering two religious institutions in each ward. “Statues of eminent personalities across Guwahati were also cleaned to promote civic responsibility and public awareness about hygiene,” GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania said.
He said the CM has consistently emphasised the importance of a clean, disciplined, and citizen-centric urban system. “The cleanliness drive undertaken by GMC councillors on the occasion of the CM’s birthday is not just a one-day activity, but the beginning of a mass movement,” Sarania said.As part of the programme, marketing facilities under the Zoo Road flyover will be provided to five self-help groups through the Udyamita Haat, funded by the women entrepreneurship scheme.In addition, 1,000 neem saplings will be planted across 60 wards under the Green Guwahati Project. Institutions where the saplings grow successfully will receive financial assistance of Rs 3 lakh after six months.Sarania said mini high mast lights will be installed in about 400 religious and social institutions under the Banti Project.
