Panaji: Goa Football Association (GFA) president Caitano Fernandes has been invited by the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) to attend its Extra Ordinary Congress as an observer in Thailand on January 26.Caitano, a member of SAFF’s competitions committee, is already in Thailand and will attend the Congress where he is expected to meet high-ranking officials from the region and Asian Football Confederation (AFC).“On behalf of SAFF president, we cordially invite you to attend the SAFF Extra Ordinary Congress as an Observer. We look forward to welcoming you and hosting you at the SAFF executive committee meeting,” SAFF general secretary Purushottam Kattel said in his email to Caitano.According to the agenda, the Congress on Monday is expected to take up some important matters including discussion and ratification of the amendment of the SAFF Statutes, besides amendment of the Standing Orders of the Congress.SAFF will also elect members of the disciplinary and ethics committee, appeal committee and electoral committee.The Congress will be chaired by SAFF president Kazi Md. Salahuddin.The Congress is being held on the sidelines of the inaugural SAFF Futsal Championship 2026. Bangladesh emerged triumphant in the women’s championship after winning all their games, while India had to settle for the runnersup spot.In the men’s category, Maldives logged their fifth win in as many games and were crowned the inaugural SAFF men’s futsal champions with a game to spare. India will aim to get the runners-up spot when they face second-placed Pakistan in their concluding match on Monday.
