Free rabies treatment at BHU Trauma Centre amid rising dog bite cases

Varanasi: A sharp rise in dog bite cases across Varanasi and adjoining regions has triggered concern among health authorities, prompting the Trauma Centre of IMS-BHU to strengthen emergency preparedness and public advisories. The centre is providing Anti-Rabies Vaccine (ARV) and Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG) free of cost to all eligible animal bite victims, in line with ICMR guidelines and the National Rabies Control Programme (NRCP). Health officials warn that rabies is 100% fatal once symptoms appear, yet completely preventable if treatment is taken on time. As per national guidelines, Category II and Category III bite victims must immediately wash wounds thoroughly and begin vaccination without delay, with rabies immunoglobulin mandatory for severe (Category III) bites.Prof Saurabh Singh, Professor in-charge of the Trauma Centre, said more than 600 dog and animal bite victims received free anti-rabies vaccination at the Trauma Centre over the last 6 months alone. Alarmingly, 63 cases were reported in just 5 days between January 10 and 15, pointing to a sudden spike. Patients arrived not only from Varanasi but also from surrounding districts of UP and neighbouring areas of Bihar. He said the Trauma Centre follows strict ICMR protocols, including immediate wound washing, scheduled vaccination, rabies immunoglobulin administration, and close follow-up to ensure patients complete the full course. He emphasised that the situation demands urgent collective action. He noted that while life-saving treatment is being provided round the clock, long-term control requires coordinated preventive measures, including stray dog population management, mass dog vaccination, public awareness, and responsible pet ownership. In response to the surge, authorities indicated that preventive steps for animal bite control, particularly dog bite prevention, will be undertaken in coordination with civic and administrative agencies, focusing on reducing human–animal conflict in high-risk localities.
