Fraud offers Harvard hostel room, cheats Gurgaon woman of Rs 16L

Gurgaon: A woman from Old DLF Colony has accused a Faridabad resident of cheating her of Rs 16 lakh on the pretext of arranging hostel accommodation for her two brothers at Harvard University. When she demanded a refund, he threatened her. A case of cheating was registered on Monday.The complainant, Yukti Bhardwaj, said that she paid the amount by cheque to Mrinank Singh, a resident of Faridabad’s Sector 17, for hostel fees related to the admission of her brothers to Harvard. However, she alleged that the amount was never deposited with the university.

According to the complaint, Singh repeatedly avoided answering her queries about the payment. When she demanded that the money be returned, he threatened to kill her during a phone call. “Bhardwaj alleged that Singh had issued a cheque of Rs 16 lakh, but the amount was not credited,” an officer said.Bhardwaj submitted a complaint on Dec 19, 2025, which was marked to DCP (west) Karan Goel. A case was registered at Sector 14 police station on Monday under Section 318(4) (cheating) of BNS. Investigating officer ASI Guldeen Khan said the accused has not been arrested. “He runs a private business in Faridabad,” Khan said.The complainant could not be contacted.
