Four WASMO social mobilisers arrested in 123cr Nal Se Jal Scam

Vadodara: Four social mobilisers who worked with the Water and Sanitation Management Organisation (WASMO) have been arrested by the CID (crime) in connection with the Nal Se Jal water supply scheme scam in Mahisagar district. The agency is investigating the Rs 123.44 crore scam, for which an offence was registered last year.The arrested mobilisers — Girish Valand, Janardan Patel, Mahendrakumar Rathod, and Natha Damor — worked on contract with WASMO in Khanpur, Lunawada, Kadana and Santrampur talukas. Their duties included engaging villagers and promoting participation in the water supply scheme.Officials alleged that the accused took blank letterheads from village sarpanches and forged their signatures to sanction works under the scheme. Sources said many of these works were either not executed or left incomplete, while payments were made to contractors. Around 100 contractors are under investigation for their involvement in the scam.With these arrests, the total number of people detained in connection with the scam has risen to 22. Sleuths are interrogating more individuals and further arrests are expected. Several major contractors involved in the scam remain absconding.
