Kurukshetra: Police in this Haryana district have dismantled a coordinated cybercrime network that siphoned more than Rs 5 lakh from a private bank account in a single day, exposing a multi-state fraud network. The arrest of four men on Saturday in connection with the sophisticated online heist followed an investigation by the cybercrime police station into the theft of funds from a fixed deposit (FD) account belonging to a local resident. The investigation began after complainant Dharam Singh, a villager from Berthala, discovered a massive deficit in his savings.Police reports suggest he had invested Rs 7.8 lakh into a fixed deposit in Aug 2024. When he checked the account in April 2025, he found that more than Rs 5.4 lakh had been drained. Forensic digital trails revealed the attackers had executed 11 separate transactions in a 24-hour window to bypass traditional security alerts.Following a tactical operation led by sub-inspector Mahesh Kumar and a specialised cyber unit, four suspects were tracked to the Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh and taken into custody: Rahul of Marui, Aamir Sahil of Lehangpura, Sohrab Ali of Sindhora, and Mohammad Arman of Asarabad. The accused were produced before a magistrate on Sunday and have been remanded in judicial custody.A Wider NetworkWhile the Kurukshetra theft triggered the arrests, detectives believe they have stumbled upon a much larger criminal enterprise. “During the investigation, it was revealed that bank accounts belonging to the accused, Rahul specifically, showed transactions totalling Rs 15-20 lakh,” a police spokesperson said. These transactions have been linked to active fraud complaints across several other states, suggesting the group operated as a “mule” network or a clearinghouse for stolen digital funds.Ongoing InvestigationCybercrime cell sub-inspector Ved Prakash’s team is auditing the seized devices and bank statements to trace the remaining funds, identify further accomplices, and determine if the breach occurred through phishing, SIM-swapping, or internal bank vulnerabilities.
