Fortnightly targets to close Ludhiana’s Rs-41-crore property tax deficit.

Ludhiana: Municipal commissioner Neeru Katyal Gupta has issued a directive to senior civic officials to accelerate property tax collection, as the city pushes to bridge a nearly Rs 41 crore shortfall before the end of the financial year.During a high-level strategy meeting at the MC Zone-A office on Wednesday, commissioner Gupta established a rigorous fortnightly review system to ensure the civic body meets its annual revenue goals. The municipal corporation has set an annual recovery target of Rs 180 crore. While collection efforts have been steady, the latest figures show a significant remaining balance. The amount recovered till Jan 31 was Rs 138.5 crore, while the outstanding balance was Rs 41.4 crore, so 77% of the target has been achieved. To close the remaining 23% gap, the commissioner fixed specific performance quotas for superintendents and zonal officers, warning that progress will now be monitored every two weeks.Leadership AlignmentThe meeting was attended by the MC’s top administrative tier, including additional commissioner Paramdeep Singh and assistant commissioners Neeraj Jain and Jasdev Sekhon. The presence of four key superintendents — Vivek Verma, Abdul Sattar, Ashok Garg, and Satish Kumar — underscores the departmental pressure to finalise pending assessments and collections.Development Through DuesIn an appeal to the public, commissioner Gupta emphasised the direct link between tax compliance and urban livability. “The funds collected from residents are the lifeblood of our infrastructure,” Gupta said. “These dues are used specifically to provide basic amenities and to fund the ongoing development projects that improve the quality of life across Ludhiana.” Residents were urged to clear their outstanding property tax immediately to avoid mounting interest charges and legal penalties associated with late submissions.
