First multi-organ donation at SGPGI in two decades

Lucknow: Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) on Sunday conducted its first multi-organ donation in two decades, after the wife of a brain-stem death patient gave consent to donate his body parts.The patient, Sandeep Kumar (42), suffered a road accident on February 7. He was admitted to the Apex Trauma Centre at SGPGIMS with critically sustained injuries on February 21. On February 22, he was declared brain dead by a panel of four expert doctors as per the prescribed protocol.

It was at this moment that his wife, Laxmi, took the courageous decision to donate her husband’s body parts. Under the guidance of the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization UP (SOTTO-UP), a coordinated effort was launched.A collaboration between SGPGIMS and King George’s Medical University (KGMU) ensured the successful retrieval and transplantation of the liver. The liver was transplanted to a patient from KGMU’s waiting list.Kidney retrieval was performed by Urologist, Dr. M.S. Ansari, and his team, and transplant was carried out at the Nephrology department under Prof Narayan Prasad at SGPGIMS. Cornea harvesting and transplantation were completed under the supervision of Prof Apijit Kaur and her team at KGMU.A guard of honour was given to the donor in the presence of senior officials.
