Fire guts fourth-floor flat in Citylight area

Surat: A fire broke out in a residential apartment in the city’s posh Citylight area on Wednesday afternoon, gutting a flat on the fourth floor of Siddharth Complex. No casualties were reported, as the occupants managed to evacuate in time.Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been triggered by a short circuit in an electronic appliance, such as a refrigerator or washing machine. The flames quickly spread across the flat, engulfing furniture, mattresses and other household items.Surat Fire and Emergency Services (SFES) received the distress call at around 12.48pm, following which multiple fire tenders rushed to the spot. “The fire was brought under control within an hour of the operation beginning. The blaze had spread across the entire flat, but the residents moved out immediately after realising the danger,” an SFES official said.As a precautionary measure, residents of other flats in the building were also evacuated until the fire was completely doused. Firefighting teams from Majura Gate, Vesu and Bhimrad stations were pressed into service to control the blaze.
