Hyderabad: An excise constable, G Soumya, who had been battling for life after being run over by ganja smugglers at Madhavanagar village in Nizamabad district on Jan 24, died at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) on Saturday.Soumya was on life support at NIMS, and the hospital said she could not be saved despite continuous medical attention and best efforts. Doctors had earlier said her blood pressure had fallen to dangerously low levels and was being sustained with high doses of medication. On Jan 24, an excise team conducting a routine vehicle check intercepted a car suspected of transporting ganja. As Soumya stood in front of the vehicle to stop it, the driver suddenly accelerated and mowed her down. She was initially rushed to a local hospital, where doctors performed emergency surgery removing her spleen and one kidney, before being shifted to NIMS the following day for advanced treatment. She had also sustained severe liver injuries, multiple rib fractures and internal bleeding. As multiple organs were gradually failing, Soumya underwent renal replacement therapy (dialysis) to support kidney function. Advanced life support measures were provided, but her response to treatment remained limited, doctors said.
