Lucknow: An engineer from Gomtinagar lost Rs65 lakh over the past eight years due to an online app addiction, prompting him to lodge a complaint at Gomtinagar police station. The complainant alleged that the app employed manipulative tactics to keep him hooked and failed to act on repeated requests to close his account.A resident of Khargapur in Gomtinagar extension said he initially created an account using his wife’s documents and gradually became addicted to the game, unaware that his life savings were steadily being depleted. “I only realised the extent of the loss after my entire hard-earned money was gone. It was my life savings,” he said.
He claimed that despite sending hundreds of emails and making multiple phone calls urging the company to deactivate his account, it took no action. “Even when I tried to stop, the app’s design kept pulling me back in,” he said.Police registered a case under the IT Act, citing deliberate fraud and manipulative practices by the app operators.Inspector Gomtinagar, Brajesh Chandra Tiwari, confirmed that investigations are underway and cautioned the public to exercise extreme caution while using online gaming platforms.
