Bengaluru: The department of school education and literacy has re-issued an order making e-attendance mandatory for students in govt and aided primary schools, high schools, and pre-university colleges starting from the 2026–27 academic year.In the previous budget, the govt announced the ‘Niranthara’ programme to record e-attendance through facial recognition of children and Rs 5 crore was allocated for the installation of artificial intelligence-based mobile and other equipment. However, it was not implemented in 2025–26. Therefore, the previous order was withdrawn, and instructions were issued to implement it from 2026–27 through the e-governance centre of the department of personnel and administrative reforms at a cost of Rs 2.2 crore.
Meanwhile, the department issued another order making attendance confirmation through a mobile application, ‘KAMS’ (Karnataka Attendance Management System), mandatory for all teaching and non-teaching staff of govt schools and colleges.
