Vadodara: A police sub-inspector, allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, knocked down a pedestrian and rammed his vehicle into another car on the Godhra-Lunawada highway near Bhayasar village in Lunawada taluka of Mahisagar district on Wednesday evening.The incident occurred when Mansukh Nayak (60), a caretaker of shops located along the highway, was returning to his room after finishing work. A compact SUV, reportedly being driven recklessly, hit Nayak, causing him to fall on the road.Nayak sustained injuries to his legs and was immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment.After hitting Nayak, the SUV also crashed into another car on the highway. Police were alerted and reached the spot, where they found the SUV driver in a heavily intoxicated condition and not in a stable state of mind.Subsequent verification revealed that the driver was armed police sub-inspector H G Kharadi, posted with the Quick Response Team (QRT) of Mahisagar police at the district headquarters. The PSI was taken into custody and later arrested. Medical tests were also conducted to confirm alcohol consumption.Deputy superintendent of police Kamlesh Vasava told media persons that Kharadi was suspended with immediate effect and an inquiry had been initiated. Vasava added that the police have also started procedures to cancel the officer’s driving licence.
