Drug peddler held with 1 kg heroin

TNNLudhiana: Khanna police have arrested a drug peddler after recovering one kilogram of heroin from his possession in Samrala area. The accused has been identified as 23-year-old Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Oda Basti on Border Road in Fazilka. Police said that on Jan 15, 2026, at around 7.15pm, ASI Pramod Kumar received specific information from a reliable source about Gurmeet Singh’s involvement in drug trafficking. According to the tip-off, the accused had brought a large consignment of heroin in a backpack to the bus stand on Samrala Bypass along Chandigarh Road, and could be apprehended with a substantial quantity of narcotics.Khanna SSP Darpan Ahluwalia said based on this information, a case under relevant sections of the NDPS Act was registered at Samrala police station. A police team then conducted a raid at the indicated location and apprehended Gurmeet Singh. Search of the backpack he was carrying yielded one kilogram of heroin. The accused was taken into custody as per procedure.Police said custodial interrogation of the accused is underway and important disclosures are expected. Sources added that investigators are working to determine where Gurmeet Singh procured the heroin from and to whom he was supposed to deliver the consignment.According to SSP Ahluwalia, the accused worked as a driver with a ride-hailing service in Chandigarh. She said he was addicted to drugs, and due to financial pressure, he had started working as a courier in the drug trade. His handler had allegedly promised him a commission of Rs 30,000 per month for transporting consignments. Police said efforts are on to identify the handler and trace the broader network associated with the seized consignment.
