Dr Sandeep Bansal takes charge as IASSA head to combat obstructive sleep apnoea in India

Chandigarh: Dr Sandeep Bansal from the ENT department, PGIMER, has taken charge as the president of the Indian Association of Surgeons for Sleep Apnoea (IASSA), outlining a bold, collaborative vision to combat the growing burden of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in India.Calling OSA a “silent epidemic” with serious cardiovascular, metabolic, and neuro-cognitive consequences, Dr Bansal stressed that its management must move beyond isolated speciality care towards a structured interdisciplinary model. He advocated closer integration between ENT surgeons, pulmonologists, sleep physicians, maxillofacial surgeons, neurologists, anaesthesiologists, and allied health experts to ensure comprehensive, patient-centred treatment.

Under his leadership, the IASSA will prioritise evidence-based protocols, collaborative research, standardised surgical pathways, and advanced training platforms for young clinicians. Strengthening national and international academic partnerships will also be a key focus.Expressing gratitude for the trust reposed in him, Dr Bansal reaffirmed his commitment to elevating the standards of sleep medicine and sleep surgery in India through innovation, education, and unified clinical excellence.
