Doctors treat 9-month-old child with rare kidney, gallbladder ailments

Lucknow: Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow, successfully treated a 19-month-old child from Nepal suffering from extremely rare congenital disorders affecting both kidneys and the gallbladder. The child was diagnosed with a horseshoe kidney, in which both kidneys were fused together, along with bilateral ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO). The obstruction blocked urine flow from both kidneys, causing them to swell severely and occupy a large part of the abdomen, placing the child at high risk of kidney failure. Gallstones were also found in the gallbladder and the common bile duct. Several hospitals in Nepal earlier declined surgery due to the child’s age and the complexity of the condition. The family then brought him to Max Hospital. Dr Rahul Yadav, director, Urology, said, “When the child arrived, both kidneys were grossly enlarged, making surgery in such a small abdominal cavity extremely challenging. A multidisciplinary surgery under a single anaesthesia was therefore planned.” During the nearly four-hour procedure, the urology team corrected the blockages in both kidneys using laparoscopic techniques and placed stents to keep the urinary tract open. Simultaneously, the gastro surgery team performed a laparoscopic procedure, while the gastroenterology team managed the bile duct stones with medication and remained prepared for endoscopic intervention if required. Despite the child’s critical condition, the surgery was successful, and he was discharged within four days.
