Doc duped of over 1cr in matrimonial fraud

Hyderabad: A fraudster duped a doctor of over 1.1 crore by creating a fake matrimonial profile.According to police, the complainant enrolled on a matrimonial app in Nov last year. She was later contacted on WhatsApp by a man who expressed an interest in marrying her. He claimed to be a foreigner. He shared photographs and documents, including a driving licence, to build trust. After a few days of contact, the caller claimed he was visiting India to meet her. The complainant then received a call from a woman claiming to be an officer from Delhi airport. She informed the complainant that her prospective fiancé had been arrested for illegally possessing foreign currency. They threatened to arrest him and asked for money, citing various reasons such as GST, income tax, IMF certificates and visa renewal. The victim was led to believe that the money would be refunded.“The accused impersonated officials from security agencies and contacted the victim multiple times from Nov to Feb, making her believe that her prospective groom was in custody. A few days ago, the callers suddenly became inaccessible. It was then that the victim realised she had fallen victim to cyber fraud,” said the cyber crime police.
