Desilting of Tar river at Rs 2 crore commences

Mapusa: To mitigate monsoon flooding and support the local agricultural community, a comprehensive inspection was carried out of the ongoing desilting work at the Tar river.Accompanied by a team of engineers and contractors, Saligao MLA Kedar Naik reviewed the progress of the Rs 2 crore state govt-funded project aimed at resolving long-standing drainage issues at Guirim. The desilting initiative follows repeated instances of waterlogging during the monsoon, which has previously caused severe hardships for residents and farmers.During the site inspection, Naik emphasised a ‘farmer-first’ approach, instructing officials to incorporate local feedback regarding the placement of gates and the fortification works.“We are ensuring the work is executed exactly as the farmers require to protect their traditional occupations and existing ponds,” Naik said.He said that the project will effectively eliminate the seasonal flooding that plagues the region.
