Hyderabad: Majority road accidents occur due to speeding and not wearing helmet, Hyderabad joint transport commissioner Ramesh said during a road safety awareness programme organised for engineering students at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Kukatpally, on Monday.Highlighting the growing concern over road accidents involving youth, he noted that while speed may appear thrilling, it often turns fatal. He explained the concept of Good Samaritans (Rah-Veers), stating that individuals who shift accident victims to hospitals within the golden hour are not subjected to police cases. Instead, such helpers are rewarded with 25,000 through the district collector, he added.
Ramesh also said road accident victims are entitled to cashless treatment up to 1.5 lakh at empanelled private hospitals, an initiative aimed at ensuring immediate medical care without financial burden. Khairatabad RTO Purushottam Reddy said people in the 18-34 age group account for the highest number of road accident fatalities. Citing statistics, he pointed out that traffic violations are rampant in Hyderabad. He urged the university administration to deny campus entry to students who ride without helmets, and appealed to students to strictly follow traffic rules and promote road safety awareness among peers.
