Delay in payout of damages leaves Cocomi’s farmer wing unhappy

Imphal: The farmers’ wing of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (Cocomi) on Monday expressed disappointment over the non-disbursal of compensation for the year 2024 to thousands of farmers affected by the Manipur violence, despite funds being released by the Centre.According to official sources, at least 10,286 farmers and 9,807 hectares of fields across different districts were affected by the Manipur clashes in 2024.

Speaking to the media, convener of Cocomi farmers’ wing Shyam Khuman said farmers in the peripheral areas have suffered severe losses after being unable to access their farm lands. “Since May 3, 2023, many farmers were forced to abandon their fields. Croplands remain inaccessible and families have been pushed into extreme hardship,” he said.According to him, respective district administrations have already conducted verifications of the claims by farmers of crop loss, but the compensation for the year 2024 has not reached the farmers yet.The farmers’ wing urged the govt to disburse the compensation to the affected farmers without further delay and warned of agitations if the compensation is not disbursed to the farmers at the earliest.
