Man, harassed by cyber fraudsters, dies by suicide

Vasco: Vasco police have arrested Abdul Khan, a resident of Baina, Vasco, for abetment to suicide of Aleixo Godinho. The daughter of the deceased, Neefa Naperia, said Khan and others were cyber fraudsters who posed as Greater Mumbai police personnel and harassed Godinho by telling him that he was involved in illegal advertising of pornographic material.“The unidentified accused person, with his mobile phone, deceived her father through WhatsApp by claiming to be a part of Greater Mumbai police, made continuous video calls of various durations, and sent him a copy of an FIR from the Mumbai crime branch containing his Aadhaar number and claiming that he was involved in illegal advertising of pornographic video and in sending text messages to harass the public,” said the police.

According to the complaint, Khan and one unidentified accused person on Feb 11 deceived Godinho into opening a bank account in his name on the pretext of availing a loan. The duo then took possession of the passbook and ATM card and thereafter made fraudulent transactions.Both the accused persons harassed and put her father in constant fear, causing abetment to suicide, due to which her father ultimately died by suicide, the complainant said.Police have arrested Khan under BNS Sections 319(2) and 108 of BNS, and have remanded him in three days police custody. The other accused person is still at large.
