Gurgaon: A cyber fraudster, accused in a Rs 49.5 lakh online investment scam in 2024, has been arrested in a cross-border operation after being traced to Nepal.On July 5, 2024, a case was registered at Faridabad’s Cyber Police Station NIT against the accused, Virender, a resident of Rohtak, for allegedly cheating a resident of Sector 21D on the pretext of share market investments. Cyber teams began a technical investigation and found Virender’s involvement in routing the money through multiple digital channels.Virender was arrested subsequently but released on bail after claiming to have settled the matter with the complainant. However, police said he secured bail by handing over a fake demand draft, only to disappear soon after. A re-arrest warrant was later obtained against him.During the investigation, police found that the accused used virtual SIM cards, encrypted communication platforms and VPN services to evade detection. “Sustained technical surveillance and intelligence inputs revealed that the accused had fled India and was hiding in Nepal’s Butwal,” a senior officer said.Based on this information, a special team from Faridabad’s Cyber Police Station Central, led by inspector Vimal and comprising ASI Satyendra and head-constable Manoj, was formed. The team travelled to Nepal and conducted discreet surveillance for several days to track and arrest the accused.After completing legal formalities with the Indian embassy in Kathmandu, Virender was deported to India. He was brought to Indira Gandhi International Airport on Jan 28, where he was arrested by the Cyber Police Station NIT team. A local court remanded him to judicial custody.
