Vadodara: A man who allegedly carrying heroin worth Rs 48 lakh broke his leg while trying to evade personnel of the state monitoring cell (SMC) of Gujarat Police, at Vadodara railway station in the wee hours of Friday.
He has been admitted to SSG Hospital (SSGH) for treatment. After receiving intelligence about a drug courier set to arrive at the station around midnight on Thursday, SMC sleuths set up a vigil. Police had received a description of the courier and a man matching it got off a train at Platform 1. He saw the cops and began running on the railway tracks towards Platform 6. Police lost him for a moment in the darkness but on looking with mobile phone flashlights, they found him hiding in a pit.
He was pulled out and apprehended. It emerged that he had broken his leg on falling into the pit. The man identified himself as Amrik Singh Malhi (37), a resident of the Chhani Jakatnaka area of the city. On searching his bag, officials allegedly found 239.94g of heroin, worth about Rs 48 lakh. Malhi was taken to SSGH for treatment and his family was informed. On interrogation, he revealed that the supplier of the heroin was one Nishan Singh from Bathinda in Punjab. SMC sleuths are gathering more information on the alleged supplier. An offence was registered regarding the seizure on Friday night after procedures under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act were carried out.
