Couple, two kids run over by speeding truck in Unnao

Kanpur: A speeding truck ran over a couple and their two children riding a motorcycle on the National Highway in Unnao’s Sohramau police station area late Wednesday night, killing all four on the spot.The accident happened about 40 kilometres from the district headquarters when the truck driver, fleeing after hitting a container, lost control and crushed the family’s bike, the police said. The driver fled with the vehicle after the crash but was later caught. Local people informed the police.

Virendra (35), a resident of Ajgain Kotwali, had gone with his family on Wednesday to attend a wedding function in Dayalpur Beti Banthra village under Banthra police station area in Lucknow. After the programme ended, he was returning home at night on a bike with his wife Ritu (33), daughter Anuradha (9) and son Rudra (6).Their elder daughter Naina (14) was travelling on another bike with her brother-in-law Ranjit and survived. Police said Virendra was riding ahead and, near Bhalla Farm intersection, stopped and waited as he did not see Ranjit coming from behind. At that moment, a speeding truck hit a container moving ahead, causing the container to overturn on the highway.In an attempt to escape, the truck went out of control and ran over the family on the bike, killing the couple and their two children. Now only three daughters remain in the family.Police said the bodies were badly damaged after coming under the truck’s wheels. The bike was completely damaged. Police collected scattered body parts from the highway and sent them for postmortem. Several chunks were stuck to the divider.Police removed the bodies lying on the highway and normalised traffic.Station officer Arvind Pandey said that all four bodies have been sent for postmortem examination. “The truck driver is in police custody. We are in the process of registering an FIR. Further investigations are continuing”, Pandey said.
