Couple arrested, gold chains worth Rs 60L recovered

Bengaluru: A couple accused of stealing gold chains from devotees and commuters at crowded places has been arrested and booty worth about Rs 60 lakh recovered.Gayatri, 33, and her husband Srikanth, 42, residents of Sampigenagar in Kammasandra and natives of HD Kote in Mysuru district, had come under police radar on Dec 23 last year in connection with a theft. The case related to Lakshmamma, 45, who lost her 30-gram chain while collecting prasadam at Mariyamma temple in Devasandra.

During interrogation, the couple confessed to multiple thefts at temples, village fairs and BMTC buses, using cutters to snip chains. Police said the duo led a lavish lifestyle, with Gayatri allegedly spending nearly Rs 1 lakh a month on beauty products and in parlours. The gold was melted, remade into ornaments and pledged at banks and jewellery shops. The accused have been remanded in judicial custody.
