VARANASI: Two police constables were suspended after they were caught on camera stealing an iPhone worth Rs 1.6 lakh from a mobile store at Jaycee Crossing under Line Bazar police station in Jaunpur district.Jaunpur’s SP (City) Ayush Srivastava said on Wednesday that on Feb 7, police constables Mithilesh Yadav and Dhananjay Bind visited the store and stole the mobile phone while their act was recorded on CCTV camera. After the shop owner brought the matter to the knowledge of senior officials the next day, both policemen were summoned and the stolen mobile was returned to the shop owner. Taking serious note of the incident, SP ordered suspension of the accused, he said, adding that a departmental investigation was continuing against both.Yadav and Bind visited the mobile phone store owned by Shivam and asked the woman at the counter to show them some new variants. Both kept looking at different models for about 20 minutes. While one cops engaged the saleswoman in conversation, the other constable took an old iPhone out of his pocket and switched it with a new iPhone kept on the counter. The woman at the counter failed to notice the act. Both constables left the shop after some time.The theft came to light during stock reconciliation by shop propreitor Shivam and one iPhone, priced at Rs 1.6 lakh, was found missing. When it was not found despite repeated search, he checked the CCTV camera recordings, and the footage clearly showed the two constables switching the mobile phones.
