Congress to launch campaign over Shankaracharya row

Prayagraj: Congress party will launch an awareness campaign in every ward of the city against the insult meted out to ‘Shankaracharya’ Swami Avimukteshwaranand.Congress spokesperson Haseeb Ahmad said on Saturday, a meeting of party office-bearers and leaders was held at the Congress office in Chowk, where a proposal regarding this was passed. Pradesh Congress general secretary Mukund Tiwari said due to the lack of communication and insensitivity of responsible officials, not only the revered Shankaracharya but the entire Sanatani community was deeply insulted. The party would take this issue to the masses through the awareness drive to expose the character, conduct and face of the BJP. State Congress general secretary Vivekanand Pathak alleged that under BJP rule, even saints and seers were not safe. He accused the administration of turning a religious city into a political arena under govt pressure. Congress leaders also demanded that the governor take suo motu cognisance of the matter and initiate administrative action. The controversy erupted after head of Jyotirmath in Badrinath Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati was allegedly stopped by the Mela police and administration from taking a holy dip at Sangam on Mauni Amavasya during the Magh Mela.
