Shillong: Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday directed the South Garo Hills deputy commissioner and the health department to address manpower gaps at Baghmara Civil Hospital to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services in the district.During his visit to Baghmara, the district headquarters, the CM held a meeting with the administration, community representatives, and other stakeholders, where several concerns were raised. These included the absence of specialist doctors despite postings, shortages of medical and nursing staff, infrastructure upgradation needs, lack of a post-operative ward and ambulance services, water scarcity at the hospital, renovation of staff quarters, border fencing and security issues, land compensation, and the pending Baghmara Stadium project.The hospital currently operates with 11 medical officers against the sanctioned strength of 22, including specialists. Shortages of nurses, biomedical personnel, and support staff were also flagged.The CM directed officials to immediately fill nursing and paramedical vacancies, resolve the hospital’s water shortage, and undertake renovation of staff quarters. He further instructed the health department to complete the post-operative ward at the earliest and assured that the sanctioning of an ambulance would be taken up.A pilot project for a sewage treatment plant at the hospital has already been initiated and is expected to be completed within three to four weeks.On land compensation issues, Sangma said the ministry of home affairs would be apprised. Regarding the Baghmara Stadium, he directed officials to resolve the matter within the week.
