Close call for 20 as bus falls off bypass road

Chennai: Twenty passengers, including four women and two drivers, sustained minor injuries after a private luxury bus suffered a tyre burst and plunged off the Irumbuliyur–Maduravoyal bypass road near Thiruneermalai on Sunday morning.The bus left Kollam, Kerala, on Saturday night for Koyambedu, Chennai, with 36 passengers and two drivers. After halting at Kilambakkam and Perungalathur, the vehicle continued its journey with 18 passengers and the two drivers.Around 10am, while travelling along the bypass road, a front tyre suddenly burst. Police said the driver lost control and the bus swerved across the median into the opposite carriageway, broke through barricades, and went off the road. It finally came to a halt about 10 feet below, suspended amid trees.People travelling in vehicles behind the bus and residents of the area rushed to help. Soon, personnel from Chromepet traffic investigation wing and Tambaram fire and rescue services reached the spot and rescued passengers through the emergency exit and the front door. The passengers were later shifted to other buses heading towards Koyambedu.
