Beldanga: Police arrested 30 people, including a 45-year-old cleric Matiur Rehman, on Sunday for the violence in Murshidabad’s Beldanga.A local court remanded Rehman and nine others to 10 days in police custody.
The court also sent 20 others to 10 days in jail, and let off one person who was diagnosed with psychological disabilities. The belt was tense even as police Rapid Action Force battalions continued flag marches, but no fresh incident was reported.“Prime accused Matiur Rahman was provoking the crowd and inciting violence over the past two days. Police closely monitored the situation to identify and take action against those instigating unrest,” Murshidabad SP Kumar Sunny Raj told reporters. While it surfaced that Rahman was allegedly associated with the AIMIM. AIMIM Murshidabad district president Asadul Sk said, “Rahman was with us earlier, but not now. AIMIM condemns the violence and will help the administration to restore peace.”Expelled Trinamool neta and newly formed Janata Unnayan Party chairman Humayun Kabir told reporters that Rahman is a local, but did not specify whether he was associated with any political party. Meanwhile, Trinamool MP and cricketer Yusuf Pathan on Sunday visited the residence and met the parents of 30-year-old Alauddin Sheikh in Beldanga, whose unnatural death in Jharkhand earlier this week triggered the first spate of violence in the area.“I strongly deplore the harassment and attacks on poor Bengali-speaking migrant workers from Murshidabad and other parts of Bengal who go outside the state in search of livelihoods,” Pathan told reporters after meeting the family.Sona Biwi, the victim’s mother, told reporters, “It was nice of him to come to our home. I had only one plea – no mother should lose their son like this. Children go to work outside Bengal to support their family and parents. What is their fault? These attacks (against migrant workers outside Bengal) should stop. The Bengal govt kept in touch. We were compensated and given a job promise. “Responding to opposition allegations that he failed to visit families of migrant workers who were allegedly killed or harassed in other states, Pathan said, “It is an attempt by the opposition to mislead people. I constantly monitored every case and our supremo Mamata Banerjee and party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee are getting regular feedback,” he said.
