CCTV trail leads to chain snatcher’s arrest in city

Kanpur: Police arrested Dhanaraj, the second notorious robber involved in snatching a chain from a retired woman constable, after an encounter near the Bara Sirohi canal in Kanpur early Sunday morning.DCP (West) SM Qasim Abidi said that Dhanaraj alias Vijay, a resident of Shamli and accomplice of robber Niyaz Ahmad, was arrested in the encounter. He had a dozen cases already registered against him.Police said the robber carried out the robbery incident with Niyaz Ahmad 17 days ago, targeting a retired woman sub-inspector. Police earlier arrested Niyaz during an encounter on Dalhan Road in Rawatpur late Wednesday night and sent him to jail.On January 8, the criminals snatched a chain from Manjulata Dubey, an S-I retired from CB-CID and wife of deputy jailer Gyanendra Swaroop Dubey, a resident of Keshavpuram in Rawatpur, outside her home and fled. Seven police teams were deployed to crack the case. Police searched for the robbers from police station level to other districts, using surveillance and tower location assistance.Police scrutinised over 1,000 CCTV cameras and interrogated suspects. During intensive checking late Wednesday night, the police arrested Niyaz Ahmad, originally from Sakraura village in Paschim Karnalganj, Gonda, during an encounter on Dalhan Road in Rawatpur. His two accomplices escaped.On Sunday, Kalyanpur police and a Crime Branch team had an encounter with robbers near the Bara Sirohi canal bridge in Kalyanpur. Police said that when they stopped a suspicious bike rider during intensive checking, the men on the bike opened fire on the police team. In retaliatory action, one robber was shot in the leg while his accomplice fled from the spot.The arrested youth was identified as notorious robber Dhanaraj alias Vijay, a resident of Jhinjhana in Shamli district. Police said he confessed to carrying out the robbery incident with robber Niyaz Ahmad, targeting the retired woman. A country-made pistol and cartridges were recovered from him, along with the bike used in the robbery. Police sent the injured robber to CHC for treatment and continued interrogation.
