New Delhi: Delhi govt on Friday announced an expansion of public transport and clean mobility projects as part of a comprehensive, year-round action plan to improve air quality in the city. Chief minister Rekha Gupta said govt aims to sharply reduce emissions by strengthening buses, metro services and electric vehicles, while simultaneously addressing traffic congestion and last-mile connectivity.
“Delhi is working 12 months a year, 7 days a week against pollution, with clear targets and outcomes,” she said while chairing a review meeting at the Delhi Secretariat.The city’s bus fleet will be expanded to 14,000 by March 2029, with phased targets beginning at 6,000 buses by Dec 2026. Of these, 500 will be smaller 7-metre buses to improve last-mile connectivity in dense residential and commercial areas. Integration of feeder buses, e-autos, bike taxis and cabs with metro stations will be piloted at 10 major stations by the end of Jan.Delhi Metro’s 395-km network, which currently carries up to 7 million passengers daily, will be expanded by 110 km under Phase-IV and another 96 km under Phases V-A and V-B. In parallel, NCRTC’s RRTS is planned to reach 323 km across the NCR within 4 years, said chief minister office.The new Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0 will focus on transitioning 2-wheelers and commercial vehicles to electric mobility through subsidies, scrappage incentives and interest subvention. Public charging and battery-swapping points will be scaled up from 9,000 to 36,000 to support the shift.
