Chennai: A 50-year-old man was arrested for breaking into two locked houses in Taramani and Thiruvanmiyur and stealing gold jewellery and cash. Police recovered 54 sovereigns of gold jewellery and 7.5 lakh in cash from him.Police said Anand of Raja Annamalaipuram, broke into the house of Jayapratha, 45, who lives with her family on Pillaiyar Kovil Street in Kaanagam, Taramani, on Jan 23. She had locked the house in the morning and went out after her husband left for work and son went to college. Upon returning in the evening, Jayapratha found the door frame broken and the door open. A total of 69 sovereigns of gold jewellery had been stolen from her cupboard. The missing items included 12 gold chains, three necklaces, and three pairs of earrings.Based on her complaint, the crime wing of Taramani police station registered a case and formed a special team for investigation. Officers examined CCTV camera footage from the area and traced the two-wheeler used by the suspect to flee the scene. The vehicle identification details led them to Anand.During interrogation, Anand told police that he was involved in another burglary case reported in Thiruvanmiyur police station limits, where he broke into a locked house and stole gold jewellery and cash.Police recovered 54 sovereigns of gold jewellery and 7.5 lakh in cash from the accused. They also seized a mobile phone and a motor bike used for committing the crimes. He was produced before a magistrate court and remanded in judicial custody.
