Ahmedabad: A BRTS bus rammed into a bridge pillar on SG Highway near Sola Civil Hospital early Thursday morning, leaving the driver trapped inside the mangled front portion of the vehicle. The driver was rescued after a nearly one-hour-long operation by the firefighters.The accident occurred around 6.30am when the bus, allegedly being driven at high speed, crashed into a pillar of the BRTS bridge. The impact crushed the front portion of the bus, pinning the driver between the accelerator and brake pedals.
Fire brigade officials said they received an emergency call, following which a team from the Thaltej fire station rushed to the spot. On arrival, firefighters found the driver trapped and in critical condition. Using cutters and hydraulic tools, the rescue team cut through the metal sheets of the bus to create space and extricate him safely.About 15 firefighters worked continuously for nearly an hour to free the driver. He sustained injuries to his leg and was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where his condition was reported to be stable.Eyewitnesses said a crowd gathered at the accident site, with several people recording videos on their mobile phones instead of promptly alerting emergency services. Police have initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
