Bootleggers turn to Mumbai-Delhi Expressway, liquor worth 80L seized

Vadodara: The newly operational Mumbai-Delhi Expressway is emerging as a preferred route for bootleggers attempting to smuggle liquor into the city, police said.Acting on a tip-off, sleuths of the Rural Local Crime Branch (LCB) intercepted a truck travelling on the expressway on Friday and recovered hundreds of boxes of liquor concealed inside the vehicle. Officials said the seized consignment was valued at over Rs 80 lakh.The truck driver, identified as Shinderpal Singh Jaat, was arrested.During interrogation, police said the driver disclosed that the liquor was loaded in Haryana and that he had been instructed to deliver the consignment in Vadodara. Officials said bootleggers are increasingly using the expressway to bypass multiple check posts along National Highway 48, where enforcement has been tightened.Police said further investigation is underway to identify the intended recipient of the liquor in the city.
