Mumbai: The BMC has proposed introducing a ‘Pay & Use’ system for six bio-toilets installed along the Mumbai Coastal Road, charging a Rs 5 user fee for men and women. The toilets are set up at six locations along the promenade. Civic officials said the user charge would discourage misuse and careless behaviour, while ensuring the toilets remain clean, accessible and well-maintained.With the seaside promenade already open to the public and witnessing heavy footfall, civic officials have flagged hygiene maintenance and user satisfaction as key concerns. A proposal from the Chief Engineer (Coastal Road) has recommended implementing a ‘Pay & Use’ system for the bio-toilets to ensure regular upkeep.Under the proposal, users will be charged a nominal fee of Rs 5 for both men and women, in line with the Solid Waste Management department’s policy for newly constructed “aspirational toilets”. The bio toilet system operates on a 1 kW solar setup and is supported by a 1,000-litre water tank. Waste is managed through a bio-digester tank with a 3,500-litre capacity. The facility also features a sanitary pad incinerator and a sanitary pad vending machine, ensuring hygiene and convenience for all users. The BMC has also said that the use of bio-toilets helps reduce waste handling and electricity consumption, aligning with the corporation’s sustainability goals.
