Kolkata: Junior Union minister Sukanta Majumdar said the Supreme Court‘s order on Friday was a matter of shame, because it proved Bengal was the only state where the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise could not be completed peacefully without judicial intervention.“Parallel SIR exercises are being conducted in so many states. But all the controversies are only in Bengal, because the state govt attempted to destabilise the exercise,” said Majumdar.He added: “The SIR is being conducted by the Election Commission. Our demand to the EC was an error-free electoral roll. There cannot be a single infiltrator on the roll. No Indian, irrespective of caste or religion, should be out of the electoral roll.”Bengal leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari repeated his infiltrator bogey. “Any Indian, whether Hindu, Muslim or Christian, will have their names on the electoral roll. The Hindus came from Bangladesh following religious persecution. But the infiltrators should be driven out of the country. They are grasping land and spreading fast across the borders,” he said.BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya claimed the Supreme Court had delivered a “decisive blow to the Mamata Banerjee govt’s attempt to compromise the SIR.”He alleged, “DMs and SDOs were, in a premeditated manner, delaying scrutiny of documents and keeping original documents pending until the last minute, in the hope that they would (eventually) accept them without scrutiny or assigning reasons.”“All these will now come under judicial review and supervision. The well-laid plans of the Mamata Banerjee administration are beginning to unravel,” he said.“As judicial officers, backed by EC observers, review pending documents and objections raised through Form-7 submissions, accountability will finally be enforced. The integrity of Bengal’s electoral rolls will not be restored under judicial oversight,” Malviya added.
