BJP municipal poll candidate dies by suicide in Telangana’s Maktal; party claims harassment by Congress leaders

HYDERABAD: A 46-year-old BJP candidate from Ward 6 of Maktal Municipality in Telangana’s Narayanpet district died by suicide early on Tuesday, police said.“Today, around 5:30am, Mahadevappa, a 46-year-old BJP candidate from Ward 6 in Maktal Municipality, died by suicide. We have registered a case and are investigating the matter. The deceased body has been shifted for post-mortem examination,” Narayanpet Police said.Reacting to the incident, Telangana BJP President N Ramchander Rao alleged that Mahadevappa was driven to suicide due to harassment by Congress leaders, including a local minister.“Today early in the morning, BJP tribal candidate from ward 6 of Maktal municipality committed suicide because of the harassment by the local minister Vakiti Srihari. He was being harassed by the Congress party leaders for the last many days,” Rao said.“He was forced to join the Congress. He somehow came out of their clutches and got a BJP ticket, and he was contesting. He was a BJP worker from the very beginning. Because of the harassment and threats by the local minister and his goons, he committed suicide this morning,” Rao added.Condemning the incident, the BJP demanded strict action. ‘BJP condemns this and wants the minister to be suspended and demands his arrest. Also, the tribal commission should take cognisance of this matter,’ Rao further added.Police said further investigation is underway, and the post-mortem report is awaited.(With inputs from agency)
