Bhilwara: BJP MLA Gopichand Meena demanded in the state Assembly Tuesday to rename his constituency, Jahazpur, as Yagyapur. Meena said Jahazpur in Bhilwara district was a historical and religious place and its name was Yagyapur even during the Mahabharata era. He said that considering the religious and mythological significance of the town, its name should be changed back to Yagyapur. The MLA’s demand followed a unanimous resolution passed by Jahazpur municipal board to demand that the town’s name be changed to Yagyapur.
According to popular belief, the serpent sacrifice was performed in Nagola of Jahazpur by Janmejay to avenge his father King Parikshit’s death from the bite of Takshak serpent. This legendary site is currently marked by a huge statue of Nag Devta installed there, and is visited by devotees every year on dates of Nag Panchami and Sawan Panchami.
