Bike thieves open fire during chase on NH-37

Dibrugarh: On the eve of Republic Day, a local resident narrowly escaped death after motorcycle thieves opened fire during a high-speed chase along NH-37 in Sivasagar.The incident occurred at around 11:45 am on Sunday at Rajmai daily market. Biman Rai (54) and his nephew Rocktim (27) parked their motorcycle to buy vegetables when Rocktim noticed a stranger attempting to wheel the bike away. As the duo raised an alarm and gave chase, the thief managed to start the engine and sped toward Sivasagar town, briefly stopping to pick up an accomplice.Local youth Mushtaqur Rahman joined the pursuit in his car, chasing the duo for nearly 5 km. At Japihojia, Rahman overtook the motorcycle and blocked its path. One of the thieves pulled out a pistol, fired through the front left window of Rahman’s car and they sped away.Rahman later said, “I saw the gun pointed right at me. Instinct kicked in, I ducked.” Police they have launched an intensive manhunt.
