Ludhiana: A man arrested in a bike theft case escaped from police custody when a police team was bringing him and his two associates back to the police station after a local court sent them to one-day police custody. Though he was allegedly wearing handcuffs, he managed to free himself and jumped out of the moving car.Division Number 2 police have registered a fresh FIR against the accused, Vicky Raj of Haridwar, who had been living near the Ludhiana railway station. According to the FIR lodged on the statement of ASI Jasveer Singh, police arrested Vicky Raj along with Jamipal and Jagdeep Singh in connection with a bike theft case. Police also recovered a stolen motorcycle from them in the Janakpuri area.
The ASI stated that he, ASI Gurdev Singh and Punjab Home Guard volunteer Karan Singh took the trio to court, where they were remanded in police custody. After the proceedings, the police team was returning to the police station. Jasveer Singh was driving the vehicle, while the three accused were seated in the rear with ASI Gurdev Singh and the Home Guard volunteer.Near JMD Mall, close to the railway station, the driver slowed the vehicle due to traffic. At that moment, the accused, Vicky Raj, reportedly freed himself from the handcuffs and jumped out of the moving car. The police immediately stopped the vehicle and chased him, but he managed to escape.Following the incident, a fresh FIR was registered under Section 262 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for resistance or obstruction to lawful apprehension.Police officials said raids are underway to trace and re-arrest the accused.MSID:: 127469225 413 |
