Bengaluru demolition drive row: 'Jai Bangla' shout triggers arrest of 'Bangladeshi' woman; faces sovereignty charges

BENGALURU: A 27-year-old woman, allegedly an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh, was arrested on charges of raising Jai Bangla slogans at Podu village, near Jigani, south Bengaluru.The arrested woman, Sharbanu Khatun, worked as a domestic help and lived in the city along with her husband for the last few years. She raised the slogans during a demolition drive.

According to the complaint filed by head constable Vrushabendra of Hebbagodi police station on Jan 11, he came across a video of a woman raising Jai Bangla slogans on social media platforms. When asked by the person recording the video during the demolition drive to raise Bharat Mata ki Jai slogans, Sharbanu instead said Jai Bangla, according to the complaint. However, she switched to Bharat Mata ki Jai slogans after a few seconds.A case was registered against Sharbanu under BNS Sections 152 (act endangering sovereignty, unity and integrity of India), 196 (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc, and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 197 (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration), and 353 (statements conducing to public mischief).
